My Hair Used To Be So Beautiful

What Have I done

Damaged hair progresses from cuticle degradation (dryness, frizz, dullness) to cortex exposure (breakage, split ends, high porosity). Early stages involve loss of moisture, while advanced damage causes structural, irreversible weakness. Key signs include a rough, straw-like texture, tangling, lack of elasticity, and uneven color.

Stages of Hair Damage

  • Stage 1: Initial Damage (Cuticle Damage): The outer protective cuticle layer becomes cracked, lifted, or worn.
  • Signs: Dryness, lack of shine, increased frizz, and slight roughness.

Causes: Mild heat styling, UV exposure, or initial chemical coloring.

  • Stage 2: Structural Weakness (Cortex Exposure): The cuticle layer is partially lost, exposing the inner cortex.

Signs: Noticeable split ends, increased breakage, tangling, and a rough texture.

  • Causes: Regular heat, bleaching, or harsh brushing.
  • Stage 3: Severe Damage (Deconstructed Hair): The cuticle is largely gone, and the cortex is severely damaged or broken.
    • Signs: Gummy, stretchy, or mushy hair when wet, excessive breakage, extremely porous, and unable to hold style.
    • Causes: Excessive chemical processing, such as overlapping bleach or, repeated chemical straighteners.

Here are some tips

  • Early Stage: Use hydrating conditioners, and minimize heat tools use Thermal protectants, usually applied to dry hair and brshed thru) to restore moisture and smooth the cuticle.
  • Mid-Stage: Utilize protein treatments to temporarily mend the structure and get regular trims to stop split ends from traveling up.
  • Severe Stage: A significant haircut is usually necessary as the hair cannot be fully repaired, requiring a fresh start.

Common Indicators of Damage

  • Porosity: High-porosity hair that absorbs water quickly but feels dry instantly.
  • Elasticity Loss: Hair that snaps instead of stretching when pulled.
  • Texture Change: Hair feels rough, brittle, or “fried”.
  • Frizz/Flyaways: The cuticle is raised, causing moisture loss.
